Ambassador Kathleen Stephens will present:  The U.S. -  South Korea Alliance:  Anachronism or Archetype?

The U.S. - South Korea security alliance marked its 70th anniversary with South Korean President Yoon as the guest of President Biden at a White House State Dinner.  Forged in the shared sacrifice of the Korean War, the U.S. - South Korean relationship is broader, deeper and more important than ever.  But what is the prognosis for the alliance in the midst of simultaneous global crises and a reevaluation of America's post World War II leadership?

Ambassador (retired) Kathleen Stephens has served as President and CEO of the Korean Economic Institute of America since 2018.  She was a career diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service from 1978-2015.  She was the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea from 2008-2011, the first woman and first Korean speaker to hold the position.  From 1983-1989, she served as a political officer at the Embassy in Seoul and later led the U.S. Consulate in Busan.  Other overseas postings included China, the former Yugoslavia, Portugal, Northern Ireland, where she was Consul General in Belfast during negotiations culminating in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, and India, where she was the Charge'd Affaires from 2014-2015.

She also held numerous positions in Washington at the State Department and the White House:  acting Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs (2012), Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs (2005-2007), Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs (2003-2005), and National Security Council Director for European Affairs at the Clinton White House.

She has had Fellowships at Stanford University, Hankuk University (Seoul), Georgetown University, and the Mansfield Foundation.  She also is the board chairman for Pacific Century, a trustee for The Asia Foundation, on the board of The Korea Society, and a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy and the Council on Foreign Relations.  Her interest in international relations began as a Peace Corps volunteer and trainer in rural Korea from 1975 to 1977.
